Sunderland team news

Sunderland striker Darren Bent is facing a race to be fit for Saturday's visit of West Ham, as he battles to overcome a knee problem.

The forward missed Tuesday's Carling Cup penalty shoot-out defeat by Aston Villa but is rated as better than 50-50 for the Hammers match, after returning to training on Thursday

Fellow striker Fraizer Campbell is a doubt after suffering a knock against Villa, while Phil Bardsley (shoulder) and George McCartney (hip) are also touch-and-go.

Midfielder Bolo Zenden and centre-back John Mensah are ruled out. Lee Cattermole is a long-term absentee with knee ligament damage.

The striker did not report to training on Friday morning and is almost certain to miss out.

Another is Chris Samba, who is back in training but unlikely to feature as he is still feeling weak.

Pascal Chimbonda returns having recovered from his calf injury and Vince Grella is back in training after his thigh problem, but is unlikely to appear for the first team until next week.

Friedel is likely to replace Brad Guzan even though his fellow American made three penalty shoot-out saves in the midweek Carling Cup win over Sunderland.

Burnley team news

Burnley manager Owen Coyle will give goalkeeper Brian Jensen "every chance" to recover from the injury he sustained in last weekend's home defeat to Wigan.

X-rays revealed the Burnley stopper, who has yet to resume full training, had suffered only slight ligament damage to his ankle so Diego Penny is on stand-by.

Stephen Jordan suffered a thigh strain in the same match but he is expected to recover in time.

The Clarets are still without long-term absentees Martin Paterson, Chris McCann (both knee) and Jay Rodriguez (ankle).

Hull City team news

Hull will be without goalkeeper Boaz Myhill for Saturday's vital trip to Burnley.

The Wales international injured his medial knee ligaments in the closing stages of last weekend's goalless draw with fellow strugglers Portsmouth and will sit out the match, though manager Phil Brown is hopeful he will not prove a long-term absentee.

Assistant manager John Gorman told Sky Sports that goalkeeper Radek Cerny (pictured), and defenders Peter Ramage and Mikele Leigertwood, were affected by the contagious illness at various points since the summer.

Leigertwood was the most recent victim, returning from the virus to the bench for the 4-2 win at Derby last weekend.

"I'm afraid we have had two or three of the boys out with it," Gorman said.

"But we have just got on with it and kept them away from the club. Matthew Connelly has been out for ages with glandular fever and these sorts of things happen. We have just accepted that these injuries and these illnesses occur.

"Mikele Leigertwood had it and he came back into the squad last week. Peter Ramage and our goalkeeper, Cerny, were out with it right at the beginning of the season as well.

So the lads have done really well to recover and it's back to business again.

Carling Cup Arsenal vs Liverpool

the third round win over West Bromwich Albion, Arsenal's line-up was composed of players almost exclusively under the age of 21 - Mikael Silvestre and Philippe Senderos were the sole sops to experience - and Wenger has promised to do likewise this week.

"It will be a mixed team but we want to win every single game we play, no matter who plays," he said.

Wenger will also be mindful of the possible benefits of piling more pressure on Benitez by inflicting an early exit on his team.

The Spaniard has ridden the immediate crisis created by four straight defeats by engineering a victory over Manchester United last Sunday but Liverpool's season is still in danger of sliding away, with the club's Champions League hopes hanging by a thread and a six-point gap separating them from league leaders Chelsea.

Being dumped out of the League Cup would not precipitate any drastic action at Anfield but it would deal another blow to morale and Wenger, while he would never admit to it in public, would consider that incentive enough ahead for his makeshift team.

There are more prosaic concerns for his players, as well, not least convincing Wenger that they could be worth a place in his regular starting line-up.

Teenagers such as Francis Coquelin, Sanchez Watt, Jack Wilshere, Mark Randall and Kerrea Gilbert - all of whom can expect to be involved at some point on Wednesday - might still be too raw for Premier League football but that does not apply to all the stand-ins.

Carlos Vela, the Mexican winger, and Croatian striker Eduardo will be determined to re-establish themselves in Wenger's thoughts after frustrating spells out with injuries.

Striker John Carew believes Aston Villa should be challenging in the latter stages of the Carling Cup every season as they look to book a quarter-final spot at the expense of Sunderland.

Villa have had a dismal record in the competition in recent years and crashed to underdogs Leicester and QPR on home soil at the second round stage in the previous two campaigns. But they overcame Cardiff in the third round last month and victory at the Stadium Of Light would secure a place in the last eight.

Carew said: "In the last two years we went out of this competition in the second round and this is a trophy we can really go for and should be fighting for."

He added: "Teams around us (in the Barclays Premier League) have reached quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals and there is no reason why we can't be there as well.

"It is important for Villa to do well in this competition having gone out of Europe. We are not in the Europa League anymore and we have to focus on this one.

"It is a chance to win a big trophy and we really have to go for it.

quarter-finals of the Carling Cup when he takes his side to Portsmouth.

Pulis has so far used the competition to give his lesser-used squad members a run in the first team and made 11 changes in the previous round when the Potters secured a thrilling 4-3 win at Blackpool.

While Pulis will again opt for wholesale changes at Fratton Park his match-day squad will not lack experience, with the 51-year-old set to call on the likes of Tuncay, Dave Kitson and Liam Lawrence as well as handing a return to Mamady Sidibe after his long injury lay-off.

"I'll say this quite openly because we will make changes to give players a run. It is our squad which will keep us in the Premiership, not the team," Pulis said.

Manchester United defender Wes Brown has warned his young team-mates they face a test of character against Barnsley at Oakwell in the Carling Cup.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will ring the changes for this fourth round match with a Barclays Premier League fixture in mind on Saturday when they entertain Blackburn. Brown knows United will have to be fully focused if the Coca-Cola Championship side are to be despatched on their own ground.

Brown said: "When you play at Old Trafford it is never easy. However if you can get over the fear factor, the way we play, it can be very enjoyable."

He added: "Then you go away to small ground, a tight area and it is a completely different game. They get stuck in, they are rattling and it can throw you.

"I think our young lads know what they are up against and those with experience will help. We certainly don't want any mishaps and I am sure we will be ready for the challenge."

Brown is expected to start after replacing Rio Ferdinand in the second half of the Champions League victory against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League in Russia in midweek.

He is ready to give a helping hand and believes the competition is a perfect launchpad for inexperienced players.

Brown said: "It is one of these trophies where the manager likes to put a few of the young players in.

he Blues have lodged an appeal against FIFA's ban, which prevents them from registering any new players during the next two transfer windows, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

CAS have now confirmed that Chelsea have asked for FIFA's ruling to be suspended until the outcome of the appeal is known.

"Chelsea Football Club and Gael Kakuta have filed appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the decision issued by the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber on August 27 2009," CAS stated.

"Both Chelsea FC and Kakuta have requested that the FIFA decision be stayed pending the outcome of the CAS arbitration.

"A decision concerning the request for a stay is likely to be issued by the CAS at the beginning of November."

Chelsea were banned from signing any new players until 2011 after being found guilty of inducing Kakuta to breach his contract with Lens two years ago.

Kakuta, who was also banned from playing for four months, is also appealing against FIFA's punishment.

Derby have signed Bryan Hughes on loan with a view to completing a permanent deal for the Hull midfielder.

The 33-year-old has fallen out of favour at the KC Stadium and has not featured for the Premier League club since March.

Rams boss Nigel Clough has been keen to strengthen his injury-hit squad with an experienced head and Hughes has more than 450 senior appearances to his name.

"I'm delighted we have been able to secure Bryan's services, he is player who brings vast experience to our squad," said Clough. "Everyone knows about our injury situation and when we looked at the list of available players Bryan's name stood out.

"I would like to thank (Hull chairman) Paul Duffen and (manager) Phil Brown for agreeing to loan Bryan to us and I am sure he will settle in with no problems at all."

Hughes, who has also played for Charlton, Birmingham and Wrexham, goes straight into Clough's squad for the home game against QPR on Saturday.
