Competition: England Carling Cup

Roman Pavlyuchenko's agent expects the Tottenham striker's future to become clearer by Tuesday after he revealed he is set for talks with Serie A giants Roma.

Pavlyuchenko has made no secret of his discontent at White Hart Lane in recent weeks and has been linked with a number of clubs as he looks to secure first-team football ahead of next summer's World Cup finals. Roma are favourites to win the race for Pavlyuchenko's signature and the out-of-favour striker could head to the Italian capital in January if upcoming talks prove fruitful.

"We're meeting Roma on Monday or Tuesday for Roman," Oliver Wendt told Romagiallorossa.com. "Roman wants to leave London and he wants to go to Roma. If Tottenham allow him to go, Roman could be a Roma player.

"Everything depends on the meeting we will have with Roma.

"I had contact with the Roma directors last week too and they showed they were interested."

Liverpool and Spartak Moscow are reportedly among the clubs interested in the Russia international, who has slipped behind Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe in the pecking order at White Hart Lane.

Football Carling Cup

This match is a little bit odd. Usually at this stage, we’re playing a bottom of the table team or a lower division team, for whom playing us is one of their biggest, if not the biggest, fixture of the season. Their players are usually very motivated by the opportunity to play in front of such a big crowd in a match with so much exposure. But Liverpool are largely in the same boat as us–they’ll be playing youngsters and reserves, and have about the same motivation to win as we do. As Ben Folds would say, it’s a battle of who could care less.

In terms of team news, as usual, there’s some good, some bad. Let’s get rid of the bad first–Rosicky, Denilson and Djourou are still down with injuries, and Traore and Wilshere are out with minor knocks. The latter two are disappointing, especially Wilshere, who has shown a world of promise but hasn’t gotten much in the way of first-team opportunities. He’s precisely the type of player that benefits most from our Carling Cup strategy, and it’s too bad he won’t be able to show what he can do against Liverpool tomorrow.

In good news, though, Nasri and Fabianski is back, and will both start. Nasri had a good first season for the team last season, and is still quite young–he could really be a difference maker down the stretch for us. Even more important, he could keep Diaby out of the lineup. Bendtner and Eduardo, who both came on as late subs against West Ham, will supposedly start. My best guess at a lineup

Nicklas Bendtner (groin) is not yet match fit, so Croatia marksman Eduardo is likely to lead the attack while veteran defender Mikael Silvestre is set to fill in at left-back.
Midfielder Denilson, Mexican forward Carlos Vela, defender Armand Traore and England Under-21 midfielder Jack Wilshere have all recovered, with goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (knee) also close to a comeback, but Abou Diaby (calf), Gael Clichy (back) and Johan Djourou (knee) remain sidelined.
Boss Arsene Wenger knows the importance of securing what would be a seventh win from eight in the Premier League.
"We have a game in hand. If we win that, we can be two points behind Chelsea, and we play them next week,'' he said.
"But in our job, the most important game is always the next one.
"The game against Chelsea has more significance if we win tomorrow.''

will get some sort of consistency and we won't be worrying about which players are coming back from international duty, where they have been and arranging flights for them to come back in time.
"We have got them now right through until March. We are delighted with that.''
Everton winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov is suspended for the trip.
The Russia international serves the second of a three-match ban for his sending-off in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on October 31.
Midfielder Tim Cahill has returned from international duty with Australia with a minor groin problem and is a slight doubt.
Manager David Moyes does not believe Ferguson's touchline ban will have any effect on his fellow Scot.

"Martin O'Neill is the perfect role model. He wasn't gifted a top job, even given he was a top player who won the European Cup,'' said Coyle.
"He has worked his socks off at the coal face going from Wycombe to Leicester and everything he has got he has earned - no-one has handed him anything.
"That is the type of manager I am very respectful of. He is a tremendous role model for all us young managers trying to make our way in the game.''
Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov will return after suspension.
The Bulgarian midfielder was banned for the 5-1 home win over Bolton a fortnight ago after incurring five bookings during the current campaign.
Central defender James Collins and striker Emile Heskey could be available after injury against the Clarets.
Collins missed the Bolton game a fortnight ago with a groin injury.
Heskey picked up a back injury in the previous game at West Ham which ruled him out of England's friendly international with Brazil in Doha last weekend.
Winger Stewart Downing is back in training after his lengthy lay-off with a broken foot but left-back Wilfred Bouma's comeback from a dislocated ankle has been further delayed by a toe problem.
O'Neill has revealed the "devastation'' felt by defender Richard Dunne after seeing the Republic of Ireland's World Cup dreams shattered by Thierry Henry's handball.

Being booed by your own fans is painful," he said. "They should be a bit more patient."

France lie second in Group 7, five points behind Serbia, and need maximum points against Romania and away to the group leaders four days later to reduce the risk of having to win a play-off against another runner-up to reach next year's finals.

Coach Raymond Domenech, who is even less popular than his players and knows his job is on the line, said he could not understand the fans' attitude.

"I can understand them booing after a bad game but doing it during the match is something I find difficult to understand," Domenech told Metro.

The best way for France, who have plenty of talent in their squad, to win back their fans would be to treat them with a great performance against Romania.

However, they will have to try to do that without midfielder and captain Patrick Vieira, who has been struggling with form for over a year and is not in the squad.

Coleman, who had an offer for Wakefield-born Wood turned down last season, said: "Richard has been a long-term target for the club and we are pleased to have him here.

"This is an area of the team that I've wanted to strengthen and this is a great addition to the squad in the short-term and we will look to make it permanent in January."

Coventry defenders Ben Turner, James McPake, Marcus Hall, Elliott Ward, Stephen Wright and Martin Cranie have all been sidelined in recent weeks and Wood is expected to go straight into Coleman's squad for Saturday's home clash with Crystal Palace.

That's behind us now," was Marin's emphatic reply when quizzed about Los Ticos' confidence since that heart-breaking setback in the US capital. "Of course it was a heavy blow, but mentally we've handled it well. Coach Rene Simoes spoke to us about it and we also looked at how we ourselves were to blame. Only God knows why it had to happen like that, but from now on we've simply got to focus on the matches against Uruguay."

"Morale in the camp is very good at the moment. We're working hard, we're motivated and we're really looking forward to the match. Our dream of reaching South Africa is still alive," added the central defender.

"We've been together since last week, so we've been training together for several days now. The arrival of our foreign-based lads will help us put the finishing touches to our preparations, but we'll be ready in time."

After being part of the Costa Rica squads at Korea/Japan 2002 and Germany 2006, Marin had found himself left out of the picture following the adventure on German soil. As a result, his call-up by coach Simoes for La Tricolor's qualifying run-in came somewhat out of the blue.

A disastrous showing in the 2005 FIFA Confederation Cup, failure to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a disappointing performance in UEFA Euro 2008 and failure to qualify outright for the 2010 FIFA World Cup are all the team has to show in their post-Euro 2004 history.

But 71-year-old German coach Otto Rehhagel, the mastermind behind the 2004 triumph, and a handful of players left over from that team have a chance to bring back lost respect if they get by Ukraine in the play-offs. If they accomplish that, it will only be the second time that Greece has made it to the FIFA World Cup having done so for the first time in 1994 when they lost all their matches in USA and even failed to score.

Ironically, Ukraine left Greece out in the cold for the previous FIFA World Cup as they beat the Greeks 1-0 on the road to the 2006 finals. Greece host the first leg at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday but they are missing four injured starters.

The north Africans, though, were looking assured of a place in South Africa heading into the third minute of stoppage time in Abuja. That is when the hosts finally broke their visitors' resistance thanks to substitute Obinna.

Peter Odemwingie's cross from the left caused mayhem in the Mozambican penalty area, with goalkeeper Joao Kampango only managing to parry a shot from Obafemi Martins. Malaga striker Obinna found himself in the right place at the right time to finish from close range.

In Rades, a seventh-minute goal from Issam Jomaa was enough to give Tunisia a 1-0 win over bottom-placed Kenya. The three points for the Cartage Eagles keeps them two points clear of their west African rivals at the top of the pool.

Mozambique, who host the Tunisians on the final matchday, have four points and hold the all-important third qualifying spot for the 2010 African Nations Cup - the top three teams in each of the five groups will seal their place at the finals in Angola - while Nigeria's final round opponents, Kenya, are on three points.

The Italian this afternoon named ten of the men who will line up against Raymond Domenech's side at Croke Park, but admitted he is yet to finalise who will play on the right side of midfield.

He will decide overnight on whether to start with attack-minded Celtic winger McGeady, or the more robust Lawrence, of Stoke.

However, there were otherwise few surprises with the bulk of the side the same as that which started against Italy last month.

A back four of John O'Shea, Sean St Ledger, Richard Dunne and Kevin Kilbane will line up ahead of keeper Shay Given, while Damien Duff will start on the left side of midfield with Glenn Whelan and Keith Andrews in the middle.

Russia, semi-finalists at UEFA Euro 2008, are the overwhelming favourites to reach the finals in South Africa next summer, but Hiddink insists that unheralded Slovenia can rise to the occasion. "We should never underestimate Slovenia," Hiddink said. "They are a very strong team, both in terms of their results and playing style.

"Slovenia are very disciplined and hard-working with a modern concept of playing. Their strength is their unity, there are no individual stars in their line-up."

Dutchman Hiddink added that the outcome of the two-legged play-off with Slovenia will have an effect upon the development of Russian football. "Two very important matches lie ahead," he said.

Russia skipper Andrei Arshavin confirmed Hiddink's beliefs. "In the play-offs any accidental goal can change the situation completely," said Arsenal star Arshavin.

Murray seemingly concerned by the hip he was continually flexing, Blake found form with his groundstrokes and his footwork around the court improved as a consequence.

Hard though Murray tried, he was unable to find a way past the Blake serve and the American took the second set in a tie-break.

Blake seized control of the tie-break early on with a glorious forehand down the line, while Murray was not aided by a nasty tumble when attempting a volley.

The American grasped his chance and a fantastic inside-out forehand levelled the match at a set-all.

Both players showed their strength behind their own serves in the final set as there were no breaks, which took the contest to a tie-break.

Murray could have been forgiven for being wary having lost the second set tie-break, but he took the contest to Blake and secured the early mini-break.

Djokovic is one of six players to have already qualified for the World Tour Finals, with the last two tickets up for grabs in Paris.

Soderling broke Davydenko in the fourth game to take the first set but the Russian replied with an early break in the second set which he went on to claim with a backhand volley.

The final set was tight, both players holding serve until Davydenko gifted his opponent two match points with an unforced error and hit a backhand long on the first to bow out.

Djokovic, who had never gone past the third round at the Bercy hall, was always in control against former top 10 player Clement, 31 and now ranked a modest 93rd in the world.

The oldest player left in the draw, Clement, who had pleased the home fans by knocking out German Tommy Haas in the previous round, saved two match points before hitting a forehand into the net on the third.

Seventh seed Verdasco fell to Croatia's Cilic 3-6 6-3 6-4, and now faces an anxious wait to see if he qulifies for London. If Jo-Wilfired Tsonga goes on to win the tournament or either Soderling or Fernando Gonzalez reach the final, the Spaniard will drop out of the top eight.

Football Sheffield United v Newcastle United

Sheffield United v Newcastle United
Smith claims the mauling by Leyton Orient proved to be the final straw for the senior stars, who called a meeting to tell the wantaway players that they were no longer wanted.

The likes of Obafemi Martins, Habib Beye, Sebastien Bassong and Damien Duff were sold in the summer and Michael Owen left on a free.

The transformation in fortunes has been remarkable as Newcastle are flying high in the Championship and Smith claims there is tremendous unity in the squad.

"We came back in the summer and no-one knew what was going on in terms of could players be sold," Smith told the Daily Mirror. "Certain players were making it clear they wanted to leave but the club said no-one was going to be sold. That was the most difficult time.

"We went to Leyton Orient and it was a disaster. But everything came to a head. It was clear that five or six of the players wanted to leave, which was fair enough. We had a meeting when we came back from the game - just us players.

"We said whoever wants to leave, they can leave, and we'll help them to go. Whoever wants to stay then commit yourself to stay. That's where we are now. That was a massive turning point. In a way getting that bad result was the best thing that could have happened. It was what needed to happen.
